Starlings have been known to gather in huge flocks or murmurations above moors or marshland just after dusk as they choose a location to roost for the night. As they dance through the air, moving as one in a cloud-like formation, they sometimes reach numbers in the hundreds of thousands and block out the sun, giving the phenomenon the Danish name “sort sol” or “black sun”.
